Tech. powered by Retail Week, 2017
This week Karoline, our CEO, attended and spoke at Tech. powered by Retail Week.
Tech. powered by Retail Week (read more about Retail Week in our previous post) is a two day event focused entirely on digital retail and the use of technology disrupting the sector with 500 attendees from over 300 companies. A key aspect of the event involves exploring emerging trends such as ‘on demand’ retailing and the way in which brands and retailers are responding to these trends. Described as "Europe’s largest festival of innovation in retail technology", over 120 industry experts speak during the event, sharing their insight and opinions on a range of relevant topics and cutting edge technology.
It’s especially exciting that our CEO, Karoline, was asked to speak on a panel on the first day of the event, alongside Craig Smith (VP Customer Success, Amplience) and Paul Archer (Co-Founder and MD, Duel). Karoline’s panel was on “Unifying content and commerce”, with an emphasis on exploring innovation in video to drive sales. Shoppable video is widely recognised as the next step that retailers are likely to take in order to engage their clients, monetize their content, and exploit the sophisticated technology which is now available. Karoline could offer valuable insights into interactive and shoppable video based on her experience running Smartzer. Demonstrating the strong results we have observed from the videos we produce.
Beyond sharing these insights, Karoline was kept occupied attending a variety of the many talks and sessions on offer. Hearing Jon Rudoe (Retail and Tech Director, Shop Direct) speak about the importance of a customer-centric retail model was relevant and very much in line with Smartzer’s emphasis on engaging customers. The panel: “Your brand in their hands – the power of touch and the future of retail marketing” was also interesting. In this panel the speakers Daniel Dunn (Founder, Paperplanes), Jonathan Harman (MD, Royal Mail Market Reach) and Tom Gere (VR Marketing Specialist) focused on the importance of touch in retail and how to harness the senses to engage consumers. Again, it was great to explore another way in which our interactive technology could be used to engage customers throughout the sales journey.
Karoline also listened to Andrea Trocina (Director of Technology – Web and Apps, ASOS) talk about pushing the boundaries of mobile technology. The opportunity to hear Andrea share his insights, gained from his work with the retail giant, was exciting. His focus on mobile was in accordance with the emphasis Smartzer has placed on developing our mobile technology and the new capacity for our videos to be featured within social media sites such as Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat which are most frequently accessed from mobile devices. Another great talk was given by Hugh Fletcher (Global Head of Consultancy and Innovation, Salmon) about the future of e-commerce and how Zero UI will drastically change the retail journey as consumers browse the internet without screens. It's especially interesting to think about how these future trends will disrupt retail and how we can best respond to them.
The event was a great opportunity to connect with new people in the field, and also to reconnect. It was filled with interesting talks and opinions about revolutionary technology, and Karoline’s panel was a great opportunity to contribute to this discussion, and share our views on the utility and potential of interactive video.
Thank you to Tech. powered by Retail Week for a great two days!
